Hello, welcome to my website. My name is Cynthia Lang and I am an artist from Amsterdam. I was born in Arnhem and I grew up in Nijmegen. My childhood was not filled with building blocks or playing with dolls; I loved drawing comics. At school I was bored by reading books, exploring stories through images was much more exciting. A single picture could tell a whole story. It sparked a passion for visual storytelling that still fuels my work today.
After finishing highschool with an art degree I moved to Amsterdam where I took art classes at the Vrije Akademie de Leuwenburgh. Soon after, I attended the Cartoon School to enhance my drawing skills in storyboarding, background design and character creation.
However, as life unfolded I chose a different path and I set aside my artistic aspirations for nearly two decades. An unexpected turn of events a few years ago triggered a profound soul-searching in which I rediscovered my passion for art and I reconnected with myself.
Nowadays much of my work is figurative abstract. I use digital and traditional mediums such as pencils, oil pastels, glaze and acrylics. I have always been fascinated by the art of album covers, ever since I bought my first vinyl records back in the day. They make a visual statement and inspired me to create on a square format. Four equal sides suit my compositions, whereas on a rectangular surface I see a horizon line creeping in, distracting my focus.
My most personal work is the series 'Elpida’, meaning hope in Greek. In this collection of 11 pieces I tell the story of a challenging chapter in my life. Creating each work happened spontaneously, it was my way of processing raw reality.
Since reuniting with my artistic passion I have been creating works in diverse styles depending on the theme and my mindset. As an artist I am versatile, my inspiration comes from many different sources that keep my creativity flowing.
I occasionally present my artwork at Art Amsterdam Spui, a serene and open-air art market in the heart of Amsterdam. It is a great opportunity to engage with the audience directly and receive firsthand feedback on my art.
