About me

Hello, welcome to my website. My name is Cynthia Lang and I'm an artist from Amsterdam. I was born in Arnhem and raised in Nijmegen. Growing up as a child I loved drawing comics more than anything else. Reading books at school bored me and it never captured my attention the way images did. The written word was often falling flat compared to a single picture that could tell a whole story. This shaped the essence of my passion for visual storytelling that still fuels my work today.

Following high school graduation with an art degree, I moved to Amsterdam where I took art classes at Vrije Academie de Leeuwenburg. Soon after, I attended the Cartoon School to focus on drawing storyboards, background design and character creation.

However, I took a different path, discovering new experiences thus setting aside artistic aspirations. Two decades went by until adversity struck, triggering a deep soul-searching. In this period of introspection I reconnected with my childhood passion and my true self.

Nowadays much of my work is figurative abstract. I use both digital and traditional mediums such as pencils, pastels and acrylics. Figurative abstract art for me is about capturing the spirit of a subject beyond the obvious. It's like distilling a feeling or experience to it's core visual elements - shape, color and texture - while still hinting at something recognizable.

The Elpida series, meaning 'hope' in Greek, is my most personal work. This collection of 11 pieces tells the story of a dark chapter in my life. Each work was created spontaneously, it was my way of processing raw reality.

My portfolio consists of a variety of works, reflecting the many different sources that give me inspiration. I don't confine myself to one specific aesthetic. It's the theme I'm exploring and my current mindset that shape each composition.

I occasionally present my artwork at Art Amsterdam Spui, a serene and open-air art market in the heart of Amsterdam. It's a great opportunity to engage with the audience directly and receive firsthand feedback on my art.
